Surface grinding

Surface grinding of workpieces serves primarily to produce the required dimensions simultaneously with a high-quality surface finish. In addition, it creates both parallelism of the planes and evenness of the machined surfaces. The method is equally suitable for small- and large-scale workpieces made of hard and brittle materials, such as silicon, silicon carbide, glasses, ceramics and composites. Surface grinding offers a high degree of precision and accuracy in terms of dimensional tolerances (<0.05 mm), achievable average roughness (<0.5 µm) and roughness depth (<4 µm), while at the same time being cost effective.

External cylindrical grinding

External cylindrical grinding is used for shaping with simultaneously high-quality surface finish of rotationally symmetrical workpieces made of hard and brittle materials, such as silicon, silicon carbide, types of glass such as SiO₂ and Borofloat, and various ceramics. It is suitable both for small and large-scale workpieces. Modern cycle control means that geometries similar to those of turning can also be achieved with external cylindrical grinding – in a way that is as cost effective as it is precise.

Internal cylindrical grinding

The mechanical process of internal cylindrical grinding enables rotationally symmetrical workpieces to be machined extremely precisely – for instance inner areas of tube segments that are hard to reach. This produces parts that are characterised by a particularly high-quality surface finish, which facilitates further processing. Typical applications include components such as tube targets, diffusion tubes, sleeves and the like. Besides the stability and precision of the grinding machine, the cooling of the workpiece is of particular importance.

Precision surface grinding

Precision surface grinding is suitable for applications requiring very high standards of accuracy and surface finish. With this method, very low levels of roughness can be achieved by means of a multi-stage process consisting of coarse pre-grinding and precise fine grinding. Precision requirements of this kind arise in various industries and applications, for example in the manufacturing of optical components, in the photovoltaic industry or in the course of research and development applications.

Creep-feed grinding

Creep-feed grinding is a grinding process with a higher cutting depth and a larger degree of material removal. This makes it particularly suitable for profiling workpieces (CNC profile grinding) made of hard and brittle materials – with a high level of repeat accuracy. The higher removal rate means that profiles and grooves in workpieces can be produced very efficiently and therefore extremely cost-effectively – with consistently high accuracy to shape and a high degree of surface quality.
